Hopefully (although I'm sure it won't be the end of it), HDN has put two things to rest today:

1) Nutt does recruit
2) Because Nutt did it one way at Arkansas, does not mean he is going to do it that way at Ole Miss

It looks like the split of Nutt from Arkansas has benefited both teams immensely.

P.S. Gumps- we were talking to Massie and he did know who we were, contrary to your previous belief.

P.S.S.- CPA...I'm finally okay with you using your constant mention of our Rivals ranking against us, now that it is one spot ahead of yours. Sorry...had to say it.

Hmmm...let's go down the quick checklist here...

Did State score a point against us last year? X

Did State amass 40 total yards against us last year? X

Good luck with the Spreadneck offense this year.

Houston Nutt coached the most successful HB duo in the history of the game (All-Purpose Yards) in McFadden/Jones. They were blocked by a Rimington Award winning center and NFL FB/HB Peyton Hillis. What was Nutt's SEC record with this talent? Exactly .500.

His road record is atrocious. His record against Top 25 teams is laughable. His bowl record is deplorable. His two blow out losses in Atlanta were made possible by a Matt Jones hail mary and an Alabama probation. Before leaving Arkansas he was the longest tenured BCS coach without a BCS Bowl. He is still waiting on one of those.

Until Nutt stops looking at the Cotton Bowl as the promise land and can win more than half his SEC games he will always be nothing more than an emotional arse clown that wins and loses when he shouldn't.

Apparently point number two has not yet been conceded by the hogs. How about number one?

After 11 years of coaching in the SEC, and ONE class in the Top 20, I'm not yet ready to cast a recruiting crown on his head.

But in fairness, I loathe Nutt. Ole Miss deserves better than him.

We liked him the first couple years too.

Really, Ole Miss deserves better. Arkansas is like someone in rehab telling a druggie, Ole Miss, that cocaine just isn't worth it.

You'll see.

Houston Nutt recruited this year like he never has before. Nutt rarely competed head-to-head with the top programs in the nation while at Arkansas.

I believe the fall-out in Arkansas forced Hootie to evaluate his approach to coaching. I think it also provided great incentive to prove Arkansas fans wrong. That's fine with me, Raymond Cotton Jr. is going to learn why Hootie has yet to develop a QB.

I think the separation between Arkansas and Hootie has been very good for both sides.

Remember, he was well liked in AR. He is from AR, had success immediately, knows the traditions, the state, etc... The state was behind him, fast forward 10 years, .500 in the SEC, never develops a QB on his own, then completely mishandles the Springdale situation (including running off a couple of popular players and a beloved coach).

A son of Arkansas that had the whole state's support became widely despised.

Hopefully, that experience gave him a fresh lease on life and he can make some changes to better himself. Becoming a better recruiter is the least of the changes he needed to make.

SLC, I agree with most everything you've said here. The only point I would have any contention with is the above. Kent Austin did a great job with Snead from the beginning of the season til the end, and I expect that Kent will work well with Cotton (and Nathan Stanley) as well. I think an OC like Austin that is both creative and has no agenda will help QBs succeed under Nutt where they have failed (or he has failed them) in the past.

and that is just it he wants to recruit, spend a lot of time coaching and improving the program because that is what he did at Arkansas. I believe he got comfortable at Arkansas something that will happen at Ole Miss as well.

The thing with Houston is that he believes he is a better coach than he actually is. He will lose a lot of close games call them heart breakers then when he does make a pretty good bowl game he usually will lose. Just be prepared for major let downs after great highs and an occasional top 20 upset here and there.

It is the same old song and dance with HDN -- but maybe just maybe he is out to prove all us Arkansas people wrong and continue to spill on about how he was misunderstood and mistreated by his old team. It matters more to him than it really does us especially when he is on TV asking about not us but teams we are playing and then that SMIRK---- upsetting......

I agree with most of that except he broke his streak and beat Tex Tech.

It reminds me of the Stoerner situation in Nutt's tenure at AR.

If we could PM here I would share how Hootie successfully ran off QB Coach Joe Furgeson.

We'll have to see if Hootie can keep Kent Austin and whether a QB can be brought into the program and developed.

Remember, Tarvaris Jackson (TJ) never saw the field while Matt Jones was here. TJ plays QB in the NFL, Jones plays receiver.

I'm not sure you can call what he has been doing in the pros playing QB.

He was good enough to play qb in nfl but wasn't good enough to play qb in college.
