My jaw dropped when we found the best we can do is $18k IF the mother has Medicaid.

There's nothing selfish about choosing not to have kids, though I personally want to have them myself. Selfish would be having kids and then trying to live like you used to before children.
If there is no kid to neglect in the first place, one cannot be selfish regarding a nonexistent child.
