Tell me: is the Mac OS designed as well as iTunes?

it is better than iTunes for sure.

it's absolutely a great OS and you'll never hear me knock it for the product itself.

If i had to rank mainstream OSs out there I'd put 10.6.8 in the top 2 or three.

I assumed it would be.

I bought into the hype ever so briefly. And to be honest, I have to give credit where credit is due--Apple has caused at least three or four revolutions in the tech industry.

The Mac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad were all what I would consider "revolutionary." And good for them.

But I really got tired of iOS, which is stable but dull (I went Android->iOS->Android and might like to try Windows phone next). Similarly the Airport Extreme was very stable but had horrible software (the fact that I had to install software to administer it was annoying, and it was, typically apple, not very flexible).

And then there's iTunes. One of the worst pieces of software I've ever used. It's a shame the Zune didn't catch on . . it's software was much, much better.

I think I get annoyed by the cult of mac as much as anything--people who won't even consider anything else, even when there are better alternatives out there.

Post Steve Jobs, there are definitely better alternatives out there.

None of these were revolutionary. All of these designs had been in the market for a long time before Apple pushed them to their zombie sheep fanbase. All Apple did was hype demand - the supply had been there. I will say that with the increased demand, production and further innovation of these products increased greatly.

The iPod single handedly took over the MP3 player market. There was nothing like it. The Zune was worthy, but the iPod was first.

Now tell me what there was before the iPhone? Windows pocket edition? Some crap with Palm OS? Or some horrendous Symbian phone?

No, the iPhone set the standard for smartphones, end of story. Sure, others are doing it better--NOW. The Nexus line is the top shelf for me. But the iPhone was a nuclear bomb.

And then they said the iPad was a large iPhone. Guess what: it was, and it defined YET ANOTHER segement that finds Samsung, Microsoft, etc all jumping in -- AFTER the iPad made it viable.

You may not like them, but give credit where credit is due. Also note, all of this was Steve Jobs's doing. Now that he's gone, I think you can stick a fork in Apple.

They took other ideas and made them better and marketed the hell out of them - they didn't come up the ideas, therefore were not "innovators". I was using a windows tablet to run all of the electronics in my house way before the ipad was ever talked about.

yes and no

the computer; the mp3 player, the cellphone and the tablet all predates Apple's gadgets..... but Apple made the best versions they could think of. ie, if you can't invent something, make the best damn something that exists possible and the money will flow

I'm no fanboy... But to say Apple hasn't been the leading personal-technology innovator over the past 15 years is absolute nonsense.

I think my definition of "innovate" is different from everybody else's. The fact that they took a product that already existed, made it better, then drummed up a bunch of interest and sold a ton of them, to me make them great marketers and businessmen. The people that designed the original products that Apple made better are the innovators.

You realize that this says one thing then turns around and says the exact opposite, right?

Apple = good businessmen
People that originally designed tablets/touch screen phones/mp3 player = innovators

What am I missing here?

I apologize, I somehow missed the word "original" multiple times and it threw off how I was viewing the sentence.
