Why is it taught in schools? It does nothing but confuse you :bang head:

In all honesty English departments could focus elsewhere.

Well, that and fact that Marlowe ACTUALLY wrote all of his stuff for him...

But seriously, Shakespeare and Chaucer are classics that contribute to Western culture. It should be taught in schools.

I actually really enjoyed learning about Chaucer. The Canterbury Tails is brilliant.

You think it was Marlowe? Interesting. I've read a few things on it and I'm still not sure.

No, I was joking. I do not subscribe to the "Shakespeare was a vile plagiarist" school of thought. Then again, I believe we landed on the moon and that 9-11 was carried out by Islamic terrorists, so I'm pretty crazy anyway.

I believe these things as well.

I don't think he was a plagiarist but I think he may have used a pseudonym.

My favorite is Othello. Dude smothers his treacherous wife then finds out she was innocent. Tragedy.

MacBeth FTW. Dude lets his psyco-bitch wife egg him on to murder the king, kill everyone else to cover up the original murder, and then gets waxed himself for the crimes. BroTragedy.

There's a really good movie called Scotland, PA that is based on Macbeth but set in the 1970's. "Mac" works at a fast food restaurant called Duncan's and his boss invents the drive-thru window.

You didn't learn very well. Hamlet is not a book; Hamlet is a play. To answer the op's question, it is taught as a method to improve thinking ability. However, it is not taught properly in most school and understandably so. You can't "teach" it the average class bc students won't behave well enough. You can properly teach it in AP classes, though.
