If I get an internet package that advertises 6 Mbps, can I get that speed on the wifi or is that just with the cable plugged in?

TIA

You're unlikely to ever hit the advertised speed regardless.

Your wifi speeds, and how close you come to cable speeds, depend entirely on the quality of your router.

i just have the router that At&t sent me.

I was thinking about upgrading to the U-Verse, but they want to charge a $200 installation fee. So I think I might just stick with what i got

If you can get Charter, get it.

I just did a speed test. Actual speeds, not advertised.

this. it will depend on the type of router you have. 802.11 ABGN are your broadcast types.

802.11G (fairly standard) is rated up to 54 mbps. That's pretty moot since your DL speed is 6 mbps anyways.

6 mbps is pretty slow, even for home. I had that and went to the UVERSE (they didn't charge me for a setup as I did it myself) and it's a good bit faster.

I can stream 2 netflixes at once as opposed to serious lags just doing one on the previous AT&T connection if that tells you anything. That won't be the case w 6 mbps.

I hate living in BFE. My home speed is usually 10mb down/ 1.5 up. I'm jelly.

well it was something i uploaded on facebook to make my nerd friends jealous at the time. just never deleted it because it was awesome and can pull out in times like this.

when i left there we had 2 300 mbps pipes.... to accommodate 5000 ipads for students.

Then don't really need a very expensive connection. Just make sure to password your wifi so people don't jack it and slow it down to bad.

Or be cheap like I used to and make a home made signal booster for a cheap wifi usb card and jack neighbors internet.
