Yes. Austin has mainstreamed alternative. Congrats on being what you were trying to not be.

I fricking hate the grocery bag thing, never remember to bring them and it is a pain to have to fill your cart with bags if you do. That's nothing compared to how they won't allow people in Austin to use deregulated electricity and force us to buy it from the City. Then the City inflates the price of the power to overcome budget shortfalls for their many liberal pet projects and forcing residents to pay far more than we should.

Austin is still very different than the other major cities in Texas because it is so liberal. You have Dems who run Houston/Dallas/San Antonio proper but they are more the traditional corrupt type as opposed to the crazy liberal/San Francisco wannabe style we have in Austin. They are literally successful in spite of themselves most of the time. It will be interesting as they have finally moved to having district representation as opposed to simply electing the top vote getters to the city council. There are some large suburbs that are Austin address but not Austin City Limits that will eventually be absorbed and they are very conservative compared to traditional Austin.

There is good live music with SXSW and ACL as well as just a ton of good music in the town itself. It also has some peculiarities like Hippie Hollow which is the only public nude beach in Texas on Lake Travis. It is becoming more commercialized all the time and less friendly, hell half the people that live in Austin have moved their in the last 10 or 15 years or so.

Whenever I see things like this it tells me the transition has already started and it has a force unique to itself that is as consistent and dependable as Gravity.

It is like the French Quarter, sadly it appears to be becoming a Characture of itself, rather than what it was, I suspect Austin is changing, though I have never been there.

Its a great town, IMO, but rapidly losing what made it a great town.

Because it isn't a town anymore, it's a city. There are entirely too many people now.

My observations...

- males ages late 20s to late 30s act as if they never left college.
- Lots of good food but damn there is alot of restaurants. I truly wonder how much money locals spend eating out.
- Invaded by Californians.
- Lake travis is kinda overrated.
- 20 somethings there think very highly of themselves. I knew one that ran for state House of Rep. Dude was barely out of law school. I thought that he needed to work in the real world for at least 5 years.

People there think it is seriously the greatest place on earth. It is nice. The landscape is gorgeous. the people can and will probably ruin it.

And they won't split your check most of the time. It's the stupidest fricking thing I've ever seen.

A lot of hippies settled in Austin in the 70s because it was a big college town. At the time, Austin and Baton Rouge were essentially sister cities with similar infrastructure, population, demographics, and industry. Austin took off while Baton Rouge stagnated. Austin embraced their hippies and music while in the late 80s and into the 90s, Baton Rouge did everything they could to kill it, and succeeded.

You mean like a lot of America, not all but a lot. Particularly if you are moving from city to rural and vice versa.

It's not like we're saying CS is the best town in the state or anything. It's far from it.

Austin just has hippies, hipsters, aggressive homeless people, terrible traffic, and most aggies tend to be blue collar type of people and it's a white collar town. It's a fun town for college students and kids in their 20s ( I had a lot of good times there) but after I had to steer my kids away from a homeless guy and prostitutes it lost its appeal. Still love to eat there and take customers out along Congress when a chance comes up. Bass Concert hall gets some great shows. Georgetown, Round Rock, San Marcos, and New Braunfels are loads of fun, I've just outgrown Austin proper.

I prefer Houston or SAx1000.

That's such chickenshit. Give the signal "hey you ready?" so your homies know to help you gang up on two guys.

No honor, not a man.

That video went viral a few months back. The way those hipsters fought back is an embarrassment to men.

What's sad is that the hipsters offered to give them food thinking they were homeless.

Yeah. I tend toward hippie myself due to my youth following jam ands around the country, but that video makes me wish the longhair reaching into his pocket had actually had a gun on him. What reprehensible thugs.
