If you trade a vehicle that is older or mechanically deficient below a Dealers used car sales standards, then typically they will auction it.

A lot of end of life cars wind up being auctioned for parts or for restoration by shade tree mechanics or those smaller road side dealers who sell to low income people.

Back in the day my father in law(rip) would go to the auctions early and check out the cars. If he found a car he liked he would buy it from the seller on the spot, no auction fee involved.

He would drive that car and tinker with it for several months and sell it through an ad in the paper. Then, back to the auction early, rinse and repeat.

Car Dealers get in trades all the time but they may not have the space for them or they may not make used cars a priority. The auction houses are their inner circle system for getting ride of them quickly in large volume b/c that is where most if not all used dealerships get their inventory. Also, manufacturers use them when their vehicles are damaged for what ever reason like in transit. They for what ever reason can not sell them as new even if it is a small dent or scratch.

Rental companies ditch their units there and some dealers also ditch vehicles there....esp if the vehicle has been on the lot over 90 days.

Most dealerships now days participate in auctions on the interwebz.
