When I was 8 years old I said "Whoever wins the championship this year I will root for them." That was 2004. The Red Sox won the World Series and the Patriots won the Super Bowl.
In 2007 I started rooting for the Bruins and Celtics because they were Boston teams.

I grew up as a Braves fan. I didn't get interested in football until much later (when I was 13) and decided that I didn't want to be that guy who has random teams from all over the country only because they're good. I'd much rather have a sense of loyalty and pride. So I started supporting the Falcons and Hawks. I just couldn't bring myself to support an NHL team from the South.

I've adopted the Royals as my team for this season.
I don't really have a deep connection to any pro cities, and the players and coaches change so often it's impossible to latch onto a team that never has an identity more than a couple seasons at a time.
