Better white water rafting a little bit further north into NC.

NGA's mountain rivers are more like mountain streams. Some good kayaking, but not so much white water rafting.

Helen is a good place to go tubing on the Chattahoochee, plenty of rental property in the area, but it's not rapids.

If you're going to be in N.Ga already I would make the short drive a little further up to Nantahala

You can stay around the Clayton, GA area in a cabin on Lake Burton or Lake Rabun and do your rafting on the Chattooga.

I live in Clayton.

Call these folks for the rafting:

Southeastern Expeditions

The Nantahala is for Girl Scouts and metros.

You should know there's better boating up here than that.

Ocoee River. It was used for Olympic events in 1996. I've been whitewater rafting there and had a blast.

Jacketfan, I was part of the group that didn't want boaters on the Chattooga. That's why I didn't mention it.

Also, I didn't want to give South Carolina the satisfaction of mentioning it in a thread asking about Georgia.

Do the Ocoee and stay in Blue Ridge Ga. You can also hike some of the AT. Go to Copperhill, TN and get a beer at Patrick's. Bar is half in GA and half in TN. You have to buy the beer on the TN side.

Dillard House.

Trust me on this one. One of my all time favorite places. Best country family style dinner on the planet. Lodging is from rustic stone cabins to luxury rooms and everything in between. Horseback riding and various animals around. We rented a small 3 bedroom cottage and it was perfect for friends to sit on the porch and enjoy.

Right by the Chattanooga for whitewater rafting. Recommend the section of the river that include bull sluice. It is awesome. Do the full day trip. They pack the lunch and snacks and you spend the whole day on the river.

I was fighting it 9 years ago.

Now that 4 years has gone by....... let me ask you this...

Has everything happenned that the boaters said would happen?
Has everything happenned that the fishermen said would happen?

Boaters said nobody would be on the river unless there was high flow, which muddies the water for fishermen, so there would be little to no interface with fishermen. Good boat days are bad fishing days, they said.

Fishermen said there would be alot more trash along the river, fishing itself would suck because boats would be floating by constantly, and that additional universal restrictions would be placed on access due to the increased use of the resource.

The Chatuga (sp?) Is badass, but takes some skill. I also don't know when the season ends.

The boaters certainly weren't being wholly honest. If there are people to go down the river, the outfitters will take them out. But, the other side of that is there are really only about two months of that kind of volume.

The fishermen were sort of right, but the trash on the river is coming more from the ease of access to places like Bull Sluice or Sandy Ford. My wife and I pulled a ton of trash out of Sandy Ford last time we went down there - lots of trashy folks around who just dump their junk wherever. That's always been the case with public access on water ways.

Dillard House.

Been going there since 1999. Have eaten at the restaurant and stayed at the hotel with the last time being last month. The restaurant offers some of the best southern food anywhere. It's brought to your table in bowls and platters. Some great scenery as well.
