nope, I get free checking due to my direct deposit. I don't make more than the three allowed savings withdrawals a month (which is bullshite anyway), checking money into savings is nothing.

Plus when I was really young I had like $86 in a checking account with regions that my uncle had opened for me when I was born and had put what little money a kid could save into. I didn't touch the account for like two or three years, and when I went to deposit more money, regions had confiscated my money and given it to the state because of my lack of account activity.

I bolted regions then and only returned when I moved to New Orleans where my bank was not represented. I plan on switching to Iberia, should have started with them when I moved here.

Hearing about everyone's crazy banking bullshite makes me glad I bank with a good, local credit union.

Home ec was the shite in high school, my favorite class senior year.

I didn't take it in HS but my bro and his buddies did and they all enjoyed it as well (I forget what they called it - fancier name than home ec). I took keyboarding instead and lemme tell you keyboarding was freaking boring. Poke your own eyes out boring.

He was having fun making stuff and hitting on girls in the class while I was bored outta my mind.

I didn't take home ec, but I did take ag shop. I'm an excellent cook and I have mediocre sewing skills because I'm not an idiot and it's really not difficult if you know how to read and have a little common sense. The bonus is that I'm also a decent welder. I'd have a real problem with any of my kids wasting time taking a home ec class.

open a bank account/balance a checkbook

That should be mandatory curriculum

I agree 100%.

So many people don't understand even the most rudimentary forms of finance. It's bothersome how many people go through life not knowing what interest rates are, how credit works, what an IRA is, etc. Some people think anything involving a bank is as complex as managing a hedge fund.

My dad taught me all of this before I took finance courses in grad school. I'm glad he did.

Buddy and I tried to start a non-profit aimed at going into local high schools to teach this stuff, but the schools didn't seem to have the time/interest. We had reached out to some financial institutions that were willing to give donations/grants, but we bailed when we realized how hard it was going to be getting into the schools.

You're right, I posted my response before reading the link. Not something I usually do, but the very topic irritates me. I've read it now but it doesn't change my opinion. I still think that wasting class time teaching students something that everyone with any sense already knows is ludicrous.

You vastly overestimate how much "sense" people have these days.

This is wonderful, and sadly, a rarity these days.

it is common sense. People who can't deserve a fat, lonely death.
