What?

Some attention? Like mowing every three days.

Patton is smart so I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant to say something besides ryegrass. Rye "grass" is considered a weed by most turf specialists. It's not something you would use for a lawn, especially in Birmingham.

Rye is the quickest way to get a lawn. It's a cool weather grass that's germinates best when it's cold and damp like very early march. You could still get it going but you would have to cover it with straw and water every day and you have to start like now. And it has to be perennial rye, annual is worthless and wouldn't come up at this point. In july and august it will go brown and dormant from the heat, like zoysia does in the early spring or fall

Centipede is nice but it needs full sun, grows slowly, and won't take very much traffic.

Zoysia probably grows the best there, but it's not soft and grows slow.

I like to put out a mix of hot and cold weather grass, like rye and zoysia or rye and centipede. You get a much longer green season, and the one the is best suited can out compete the other plus it's nice to get the quick start of rye.

You can do that in Missouri and north Arkansas, but a rye lawn in Birmingham sounds like a bad idea. It's more common to do a Bermuda or zoysia lawn and just let it go dormant during the cold season so you don't have to mow during the winter.

Ya'll are all talking about planting seeds. If the OP doesn't have a budget cap, why not buy some the best sod and have it rolled out or laid down?

What climate is B'ham? I'm only familiar with coastal climate grass.
