First time I have lost someone that I would have given an arm for. There are no words to describe the grief and absolute sadness I have on my heart right now. I would give anything to know for fact that there is an afterlife and that what really happened was his spirit leaving his body. It would make the grieving process much, much easier to deal with.

Call your dad guys, he won't be there to answer one day. Bless you all.

Deepest condolences.

The mortality of family members is something that no one ever wants to face, but we all have to. I hope you spent as much time with him as you could.

My father died on my birthday 26 years ago. I was privileged enough to be there when both my mother and father took their last breaths.

Prayers to you and you family during this time.

Damn that sucks. Can't imagine losing mine. The only time I've ever seen mine cry was when he lost his parents so I know it's tough. Hell its tough just seeing how much it tore him up.

Pop a cold one for him

My sincere condolences. My Dad was the first person I cared deeply about who died, too. It was gut wrenching and I didn't sleep for four days. Experienced a fugue state.

It was a life lesson, that's for sure. Made my own mortality seem very real. When our parents die we know we're next in line. Life seems much more precious than when we were care free kids.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a pain that never goes away. Just hang in there and write down as many good memories as you can think of.

Watched my dad unexpectedly take his last breath too. Best piece of advice I heard: "Find yourself going through hell? Keep going."

I'm here for you brother

My dad died on May 22, last year. Day after my mom's birthday. I wasn't there when he died at the hospital, because he was taken there not too long before he died and I had an hour and a half drive. But I did get to see him the day before and we were expecting it to be soon as he had lung cancer.

I hear you on the afterlife bit. It actually kind of makes me sick to think reincarnation is an option on the table. I don't want to think of my dad being any way or any person other than who he was. And I have to echo what you said about your parents not being there one day. To anyone who's ever said "I'm sorry, I can't imagine" when they hear of someone who lost a mom or dad; you won't have to imagine one day.

Prayers sent Commander......be thankful you had a 'Dad' to grow up with. Some of us only had 'fathers'.

Absolutely brother. He wasn't able to offer much in the way of toys or money but the man gave me his time. Showed me how to play sports as a kid and taught me how to be a man.

Thanks to all of you offering your support. I am heart broken but this thread has helped me keep my head up.
