This is all of our own doing.
If Saddam Hussein is still there, none of this happens.
Say what you want about the guy, but he kept the riff raff out.
Also, the Iraqi Army makes the French look like Delta Force. Talk about a group that just refuses to fight back, have they ever actually engaged an enemy? They always drop their weapons and run.

We helped put him there originally during the Cold War to counter Russia and Iran.

Originally yes but not anymore. AQ disavowed ISIS/ISIL a few months back when they had a row with JAN in Syria. "ISIS, so bad even Al Qaeda hates us."

I was kidding, obviously.
I thought this was evident with the "build a wall around it" comment.

I know you're not saying this but I'd like to make this an extension: Everyone thinks that the news about Iraq is some kind of sagely, esoteric deal.
Everyone knows about the superficial reasons for going to Iraq -- but could we for the love of God stop pretending like everyone is oblivious to it? Sleeping continually posts the same things and then says: PROVE ME WRONG.
It's just a platitude, it's not worth discussing because it's trivially obvious.

It's not as simple as that pie chart. What if China or India gets the majority of their oil from the middle east? Not only do we have to find a way to replace the 13% they provide, but other nations will be trying to buy from the remaining suppliers as well, driving up the price substantially.

Yea.
"Iraqi officials told the Guardian that two divisions of Iraqi soldiers – roughly 30,000 men – simply turned and ran in the face of the assault by an insurgent force of just 800 fighters. Isis extremists roamed freely on Wednesday through the streets of Mosul, openly surprised at the ease with which they took Iraq's second largest city after three days of sporadic fighting."
