I lived in Oxford for six weeks. Go to Stonehenge and Marlborough Palace and Oxford itself. There are a lot of good pubs which serve not only alcohol but also generally good food. I had a nice pizza and a good piece of fish at different ones. People criticize them for bad food but they've really stepped up their game.

Thanks everyone for the insight. Sounds like I will have to stay at least 2 weeks, gives me a lot to look forward too. I've never been outside the USA so it makes even more exciting for myself

2 weeks is awesome man. The biggest mistake Americans tend to make on their first trip is scheduling too many things. We come back more tired than we were before we left! Schedule in some relaxing times. Enjoy the local culture. Chat with people in the pubs (if you're not in London, almost everyone will enjoy chatting with a 'yank'). Have plenty of beer, even some at room temperture. I know it's tempting to do everything, but trust me, you'll really enjoy the whole trip more if you schedule that relaxing time in during your trip.

Happy to help if you have other questions!

I just spent the week in romsey right outside Southampton. Really really quaint little town. Ever spend anytime there?

No, but that sounds lovely. I'll have to make it a point to visit!

I've been all over Great Britain ... my first wife was English, born and raised just southwest of Newcastle. I met her there while I was hospitalized in Northumberland in the early 80s.

There are a lot of historic sites to see ... but I would highly recommend a few of the usual places in London, for a day, then head straight north and hit Manchester and York, then towards Hadrian's Wall, Edinburgh, etc. Those places are where the real history is visual and the people are the friendliest.
