SPC has the best schools in TX if you consider that the south LINK
St. Mark's and St. John's are probably the most prestigious, I know St. Stephen's in Austin has boarding

I never really thought about it or considered it as an option for my kids. Is this something I should have looked into?
I went to an ISL boarding school in New England.
I had good experience and I plan on sending my children to boarding school as well. Boarding school teaches you how to take care of yourself, and it gives you the chance to study very challenging material at a young age. It made that first year of college look easy. I was also surrounded by some very exceptional people, which is something I will always be grateful for.

Rabun Gap and Georgia Military(not all students ) are boarding schools. I'd put Stratford Academy up against any in Georgia in terms of academic readiness.

My sister went to Mississippi School for Math and Science in Columbus which was a boarding school that has very good academics, one of the best in the state. She is now in college on a full scholarship at Stanford

There are several governor schools in South Carolina and North Carolina that are all boarding schools

Does said school have boarding option or just a day school?
The more day students, the more watered down the experience.

Good ones in Alabama are:
Indian Springs (just south of B'ham)
St. Bernard (Cullman)
Alabama School of Math and Science (Mobile)
I think there are a couple more, but these are the ones I am familiar with. There are many other great college prep schools but few are boarding. Examples:
Randolph (Huntsville)
UMS Wright (Mobile)
Donaho School (Anniston)
Bayside Academy (Daphne)
and plenty others.

You got that right. A friend of mine has a son that graduated from a college prep day school in Connecticut last year... $41k/yr (plus another $3k in fees!) and that didn't include boarding. Moly.

Rabun Gap - Nacoochie School. Nice school in a gorgeous location in North Georgia just shy of the North Carolina line.

The old schools have large endowments. They can afford to be generous with their financial aid.

Sounds like it worked well for you. I guess it is not a one size fits all decision.
Do people start boarding school in HS or do some start earlier?

Is McGill-Toulin a boarding school?
No.
Too bad St Paul in Covington, LA stopped taking boarders.

I have good memories, and I'm grateful for my experience, but there was quite a lot of suck as well.
It's really not for everyone.

Traditionally, you'd get shipped off in 7th grade (or first form) but most people begin in 9th grade (third form) in the States.
