I lost a good friend and boss doing that exact thing, off St. Augustine Beach. They were fishing a wreck, He got a large ($$) Jew Fish on line and it shook the hook out. He tried to gaff it but couldn't. He jumped the fish, "yelled its got me!" as his father & son watched. His body was never recovered.

Holy shite, really?

No offense to your friend, but jumping a 500 lb. fish is Darwin award worthy.

Serious! I tried to find the obituary last night before I posted this, but couldn't. Happened 1993.

I didn't say the fish weighed 500 lbs, no one will ever know how much it weighed, but it was big enough to swim off and down with a 6'2" 220 lb solid man.

He was an experienced fisherman and fearless in many ways. He did what he thought he needed to do at the time.

You didn't know him, so, that's an easy thing to say about him and Darwin. And a very natural thing for a stranger to think. I would never disrespect him for the choice he made at the time.

I've lost many a fish at sea, but never nice thought it'd be a good idea to jump out and grab it.

My dad has told me stories about how my great grandpa used to jump out of trees along the river bottoms with a rope to catch gators and gar, and it nearly cost him his life once.

At no point in time would I ever think doing any of that would be a good idea. So it is easy for me to say. But I apologize for offending you.

Not at all. I wasn't offended. I've been guilty of saying worse things than what you said. Only tried to express the difference between how a rank stranger would view what he did and some one that knew him and had worked for him.
