I don't think capitalism in itself would drive the shark-fishing industry, because wherever there is THAT large of a demand for shark, there is ALWAYS going to be supply, no matter what the type of economy is. Are you one of those extreme left people? Just saying, I'm not a republican or democrat, but I really hate the extremes on either side.

I've surfed my whole life and have come across a countless number of sharks. Only one time did one ever mess with me and actually have me worried. It was a bull and was just circling me and some buds as we were waiting for brakes. I remember being at the beach for the fourth of July back in 01 when that Arbogast boy had his arm bit off by that 7 foot black tip. That really scared people down here for a good while.

You're saying profit motive hasn't contributed to over fishing? Interesting. I hesitate to ask how you know there will always (should I have all capped it?) be enough supply to meet demand, and if there is what effects does the removal of that many sharks have on the eco system. I guess I prescribe to the idea that real things have laws that go beyond economic theories, and too often we forget to account for those laws.

Plenty of species of sharks are in serious decline. There are many terrible ecological effects. One here close to SEC country is a massive increase in the number of cownose rays in the Atlantic. These now grossly overpopulated rays decimate oyster beds that serve as a major breeding ground for several popular food and gamefish as well as creating less delicious shellfish for us to eat.

I'm for sustainable harvest of anything, but shark finning is far from sustainable and this fishery will completely crash eventaully.

I'm not an environmentalist, and could give two shits about most animals 'feelings' other than dogs/cats, but responsible wildlife management is absolutely a requirement for our continued way of life. From the Gaia worshipping vegan lefties to the most hardcore nondi-baptist hunter, its at least the one issue that can be agreed upon, even if the methods are different. Unfortunately, people didn't know for 1000s of years how detrimental introducing species into new areas was. It was even a fad among the scientific community in the 1800s to introduce as many as possible to new areas.

Sharks need to stop killing other sharks before they criticize us for doing it.

I think capitalism has a part to do with it. If you can work all day and make pennies on the dollar, or if you could kill a shark and sell the fin for 5x you could make in a day, then yes people will see that as a means of living and hunt sharks to make that chedda. W/out capitalism it would still happen, but capitalism makes it happen faster and harder!

Also, there are dolphins being killed all the time, whales, etc. China has these bear camps where they are held in cages and tortured to get some bile juice (or something like that), which is extremely painful. A video was out where a mother bear broke up and killed her cub, then killed herself. Suicide in the animal world is extrememly rare.

For humans to be so smart, we sure as hell can not live with one with nature. Instead, we gonna make nature go extinct!

I guess sharks should have evolved without those tasty fins.
