Hearing that your grandmother accidentally threw out your dad's childhood baseball cards that included Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, etc

You need to send her packing to the nursing home, man.

That's the only option.

My grandpa was an avid baseball card and comic book collector as a kid throughout the late 30s and 40s. Supposedly had a pretty fantastic collection that his mother threw out after he went off to Korea, right after his father died. Thankfully my grandpa is too old and has gone threw too much to remember what exactly he had which kind of removes the sting...

My family also used to have annual passes to The Masters throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s (still have all the badges and autographs from Palmer, Nicklaus, Zoeller, etc). We lost them in the early 90s when my great grandmother (suffering from dementia) threw out the renewal papers for the passes as junk mail after my great grandfather had passed.

If you sense a theme developing, I've already taken stock of every valuable and potential valuable of both my father and grandfather so that if/when they pass away, the same mistake is not made a 3rd time

Sadly that same exact thing happened with my dad. It still sickens my dad to this day knowing that happened when the subject is brought up and it kinda depresses me too cause my dad said he had all of the all time greats of the 50s 60s 70s and 80s and a mint condition Babe Ruth

i havent thought of this in over 20 years but I hated my grandmother for a few minutes when my dad told me this story. Thing is, she burned them and it wasnt no accident

kind of comforts me to hear that my grandmother wasnt the only one who destroyed legendary BB cards.

On a semi-related note, not long after i finished up school i was helping my mother clean her house. my parents are hoarders and she had me using my truck to take a bunch of stuff to the landfill.

When i got there as i was throwing stuff in the dumpster i noticed some old magazines. They were my dads old playboys. One of the first ones i noticed was a 1978 original farrah fawcet cover.

She had already been diagnosed with cancer at the time so i figured it was just a matter of time and this would be worth some money in the not-so-distant future. she died about 2 weeks later.

My dad had an original copy of the first Superman issue and my grandmother threw it out.

My grandmother gave my dad a piece of the Parthenon that she had taken when she left Greece. She gave it to my dad for show-and-tell. The teacher didn't believe my dad and threw it in the dumpster. My grandmother freaked out

When my dad cleaned out my grandfather's barn/shop, he threw out unopened shop manuals on P-40 and P-51s. Still in the wax paper and twine.

Tons of money =/= couple of hundred.

I've talked to some folks back in the 90's and the numbers I heard then were in the $10's of K. They could have been full of crap, but they were at Sun-n-Fun standing in front of their P-51, so I thought they might know.
