The Baltimore Sun newspaper has been reporting on problems with their PD for a while now. Time will tell what happens after the death of Freddy Gray. Last September they uncovered the following: LINK /

-Since 2011 the city has faced over 300 police brutality and misconduct lawsuits. Over 100 have so far resulted in court judgments costing the city $5.7 million.

-The police union has negotiated with the city to pay the cost of outside legal defense for these cases, costing the city an additional $5.8 million.

-It has become so predictable that the city council recently budgeted an additional $4.2 million for 2015 legal fees, judgments and lawsuits, a $2.5 million increase from fiscal 2014.

I don't think I've ever heard of a situation to this extreme.

I'd like to see the same budgetary items for every large city

Chicago makes this look like JV.

But it's disturbing nonetheless.

Wow. I wonder how this compares with other cities of equal size?

Agforlife: Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to retrieve equivalent statistics for every large city in the USA. I don't think the FBI or Dept. Of Justice collects this kind of data.

It appears to have become a significant enough issue in Baltimore that the newspaper decided to collect data to quantify it.

What with the decline of American newspapers and reductions in staffing, I kind of doubt most city papers have attempted this kind of in depth municipal reporting.

Sounds like they never did before either. Democrat mayors would generally tend to be discouraging of reporting that made them look bad, I would expect.

Los Angeles, which has a similar-sized police force, paid out $20 million in brutality-related legal claims last year, less than a quarter of Chicago’s outlay. The last time Chicago spent less than that was $18.5 million in 2005. Philadelphia, with a force half the size of Chicago’s, shelled out $9 million. New York City’s last available payout figure is $152 million, almost double last year’s Chicago number, but its population and police force are three times as large.

quote:

Brutality-related lawsuits have cost Chicago taxpayers $521 million over the last decade — that’s more than half a billion dollars — and Burge’s team accounts only for about 15 percent of that staggering figure. In 2013 alone, the city paid out $84.6 million in settlements, judgments, legal fees and other expenses, more than triple the budgeted amount.

Wow! Some big numbers there in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

Payouts per capita are probably deceiving in ranking the problem. The Baltimore Sun story noted that $200,000 is the statutory limit in Maryland for most lawsuits against a municipality. I bet this figure varies from state to state.

Couple of things.

Have you ever been to Baltimore ... especially recently?

From Baltimore to Norfolk the bad element (sic: thug POS blacks) have taken over and made the whole stretch of once fine north american real estate a combat zone.

Secondly ... have you seen Freddy Gray's rap sheet just since 2007 and not counting the three years he was incarcerated?

No wonder he was running.

Still, I hate it happened to the kid - it shouldn't have - but the more that comes out about it the more issues arise.

In the meantime, the shooting that took place in Charleston .... okay, it was a yankee transplant cop and the black guy was in a stolen car and had a warrant out on him for child support plus he fought with the cop ... but still, the cop should fry for shooting the man in the back five times while he was trying to run away.

There's a lot of thug POS Hispanics in that stretch, btw.

I think his point was that those in charge of Baltimore are black, so it's kind of hard to blame the situation on "white institutional racism" targeting blacks specifically.

It's really just another case of shitty police work, due to the ever lowering of standards for police to be hired.

I knew that, but I'm not the type to pass up on a good joke opportunity.
