After our last dog death I thought I'd give'em up. That was really painful. A friend told me, "our pain is a small price to pay for the unconditional love they give us 24/7", and I think that's just about a perfect way to put it.

Very sad but a nice little memorial for what I'm sure was a great dog. Looked like he had a great life and owners that really took care of him. It's tough when people have to say goodbye.

I have so much respect for veterinarians. You go through the emotions with the owners, and many times have known these animals and their families for such a long time. God bless veterinarians, they are truly wonderful people.

So, when our girl finally wouldn't eat anymore after her cancer diagnosis and surgery, I called the vet and rushed her over to the clinic to see if there was anything else they could do for her. This was 8pm on a Friday night. The vet met me there.
He examined her and determined that she was bleeding out interally, which meant there was nothing else to do. She was not in real pain, but not going to eat anymore and die.
I called the wife and gave her the news. It took her 30 minutes to get to the vet's office, but they waited patiently for her. They gave us a few minutes along with our girl and let me hold her like I always had when we played on the floor. When I gave the signal, they gave her the shot. It was over 30 seconds later. We stayed with her for a few minutes petting on her to be sure it was over.
They didn't have to do that, but they did, and it was a moment I will remember the rest of my life. One of the best dogs I ever owned, and glad we could hold her to the end.
A good vet is as good as a good Doctor.

frick. That was gut wrenching. Brought up so many memories of losing my best friend almost a year and a half ago to CHF. Toughest night of my life.

Our 8 year old lab has bad arthritis and, while we're doing everything we can to manage his pain and slow the progression of it, he likely only has a year or two left with us. Seeing those pictures really hit home and tore me up. I grew up with dogs but he's been the best; the day we have to have him put down will be the worst day of my life thus far.
