This is one thing i hate about being black this shite is impossible. i tried to use ancestry.com once it was like

#picitureofboat

seriously all but my paternal grandparents i can pretty much trace back to the 1900's. From talking to my grandparents when they were alive i know my grandfathers family were from missouri and came from plantations up there. i have no fricking clue on my mom's site whatsoever.

my paternal grandmom was 100% kaskinampo indian

I did a DNA test and I know that my mom's "damline" lol is of yuruba decent.

Don't be too discouraged. Actually, the vast, vast majority of people--both white AND black--start running into genealogical brick walls around the 1860s. Prior to that time, few states required birth certificates or death certificates, a lot of archival buildings didn't survive the Civil War, etc. The census records prior to that era also recorded less info, so it can be more difficult to locate the right family if several families in the area have that same surname. Most of the people posting in this thread saying that they are related to such-and-such king probably only have just that one branch figured out while all of the other branches in their family tree are probably still stuck in the 1860s. Even then, the documentation that shows they are related to the king is probably not very thorough.

Dads side has records as far back as the 1760s coming from Ireland to New York. I know nothing of my moms ancestory except they are mainly German and French.

Coolest factoid I've found out while digging through it is fining out Mark Twain is a distant relative. One of those cousins so many times removed type things.

Genghis Khan's is pretty interesting. 1 in 200 men are direct descendants. Dude was laying a lot of pipe (as were his sons and grandsons).

I've got that through my grandfather's mother.

My dad has a book that traces the entire family line, I just haven't looked at it in a while. I know that through my father's father, at the latest, 13th century Scotland (castle still stands with my family's name), at the earliest, 9th century Normandy with Rollo. We were vikings, bitch.

VICTORY!!!

My maternal grandmother's ancestors were some of the first settlers in the area of St Augustine, FL in the late 1500's.

The rest of the fam only goes back to the mid 1800's. My paternal grandmother's only goes back to the early 1900's.

What TheDude said is totally accurate. My family is all of European descent, but records past the mid to late 1800's are sketchy at best.

Occasionally, there will be one big magical link. My alleged link to the court of William the Conquerer stems from the surname of one British dude who settled in New England in the 17th Century and spawned a shite ton of people. He links me thousands and thousands of other Americans all over the continent who can claim lineage through him.

Moms side mostly came over through Ellis Island. My dads side we've traced back to the Revilutionary War and owning a plantation in Virginia.

DNA is far more accurate than ancestral lines. People tend to have affairs and condoms and other birth controls weren't available until the 20th century.

On my dad's, mother's side of the family, where the family crest in my old avater originated from, our history can be traced back to around 900 AD or so. Who knows how accurate that is, only thing I can say for sure is that I am related to William Wallace. Scottish Clan records are better than average when compared to most ancient records.

One half of my moms side, we can trace back to the 1500s or so, I think. Its been awhile since I looked at it. The other half is only early 1800s.

My dad's, father's side can be traced back to the late 1600s then we lose it. That is only one generation in England though.

do you have to pay for that? I think it'd be kinda cool to go back and look at some of that stuff, but I have no interest in paying for it.

How much would this DNA thing cost, and where would I go to have it done?

Most public libraries seem to carry a subscription to it these days, so it would probably be free to you through that means.

familysearch.org offers much of the same stuff that Ancestry carries for no charge as well.
