That means I'll have three weeks off before I start, including 1 on the Outer Banks.

Good luck and enjoy the time off. Nothing better than cashing in PTO from previous job

Can't honestly comment without knowing in what way the new job has "tremendous upside".

The new job is a lateral move, salary-wise, but offers a tremendous upside that my present job cannot provide. I feel as though I have to take it, particularly because of my family.

If the job security at the new place is better than your current job, go for it.

If not, I wouldn't do it.

Be very careful about switching jobs these days. Job security and loyalty from company to employee doesnt exist anymore.

Also go in with a plan when you tell your boss you got a new job. I did this recently and my boss made a counter offer and kinda surprised me, as I didn't think this would happen. So try and figure out what it would take for your current job to keep you instead of your new job offer. You could use this to as your advantage, if you so desire. I would ask for a pay raise and more vacation days, maybe they hook you up. Also try to leverage in only working 4 days, with Fridays off.
