Cyclists in Baton Rouge are fricking crazy. Period. No bike lanes. Congested high speed streets. Baton Rouge drivers...

I'd just walk and that's not a real option in all honesty.

That's because that's what they were taught to do back when I was a kid

In Baton Rouge, riding on the road is suicide because there's no road connectivity. There's no side streets that take you anywhere you want to go. You have to ride on 4 or 6 lane highways to get anywhere and the city is incredibly spread out and filled with traffic choke points, drunk drivers, and cops with checkpoints and traps.

Yeah I can bet Baton Rouge wouldn't be friendly to cyclists.

I really can't fathom riding on the sidewalk in a city or town that's not used to it though, you'd hit people nearly every time you turned a corner.

Used to it or not, the sidewalks are too crowded here for it to be safe.

In some parts of the city (downtown DC, mostly), it's literally illegal to bike on the sidewalk because of how dangerous it is to pedestrians.

So if bikes are dangerous to pedestrians on sidewalks wouldn't it make sense that cyclists are endangered on streets?

Not directed to you DCRebel.

Sure, and it would make sense that compact cars are a danger to big rigs.

I think the issue here is on both sides. When someone in a car drives like a dickhead and doesn't follow traffic laws you don't condemn all motorists do you? So why are all cyclists assholes because a few don't obey traffic laws?

Maybe it's ignorance or "that damn bike just added 30 seconds to my commute!" Idk, I'm no champion for bicycles but I don't get the bike rage. Maybe it's considerably worse where some of y'all are.

Anyway, I think bike lanes are a decent solution but very costly. In the meantime, I guess ill ride sparingly and responsibly and hope not to get hit by some of you bike haters.

I think that's a big city thing, not just a Baton Rouge thing.

Not my point. If you are at an obvious disadvantage where your safety (life) is at risk, the burden of avoiding accident is on you. As you state, there are drivers that are dickheads, yet you choose to ride a bicycle among them.

There are a lot of levels to this. I could care less whether big cities ban bicycles other than in bike lanes. I'm admittedly hopelessly biased against big city life. (Bike lane restrictions are apparently not enough, off on a tangent just a bit. A cyclist was killed in N.O. yesterday while riding in a bike lane.)

I think I should feel fairly safe riding on country roads where I might see 4 or 5 cars total on a long ride. And I DID, 20 years ago. But I don't now, because these days distracted drivers (texters) can kill you in a heartbeat. I hate that.

I would be first in line to ban cell phones. Dangerous while driving to everyone.

Had a former employee killed by 17 yr old texting as he biked on country road.

So your point is that people riding a bicycle should acquiesce in the face of the big bad cars on the road because they're dangerous? If so, your point kinda sucks.

How about the roads be shared like they're intended to be? That makes sense to me. I don't ride a bike as a primary means of transportation, but I respect those who do for whatever reason they so choose. Because you think people should stop riding bicycles as children is about is relevant as my opinion on bleached assholes should be outlawed.

If they are going to get in the way of cars, yes.

It's dangerous regardless of where you cycle, but I will say that in my experience and where I live it is much more dangerous to cycle on the sidewalks.

Cycling in general isn't safe, but doing so on the road with the flow of traffic is easier and safer than doing so on a crowded sidewalk.

My only point is that if you, or I, choose to cycle among vehicles then we should bear the larger responsibility for our own safety. There are drivers that are dickheads, late and in a hurry, not paying attention, texting/talking on cell phones and those road ragers. These are known to be the risks. Be safe out there man.

He should have been pulled over and ticketed. That's unsafe for him an everybody around him. Dumbass cyclists should be treated the way we treat dumbass drivers.
