Isn't that because more people use it? I'd be interested to see a comparison of users vs abusers for each. I don't think there are many casual users of heroin

This is assuming that legality is the thing holding most up when it comes to use, as if millions would suddenly stet using if it were legalized.

The kind of people regularly shooting opiates aren't worried about whether or not it's legal.

Which is more harmful to an individual? Which would be worse for me to begin using? Alcohol, Cocaine or Heroin?

Depends on how much of each is used. Drinking a six pack every day for ten years is much more dangerous than doing one hit of coke a week for ten years (assuming the person doesn't have heart problems or epilepsy).

I do think more would use it if it were legal but I agree it probably wouldn't be drastic. The problem is a drug like heroin is so addictive that one use can lead to addiction much easier than having a drink for the first time.

Mostly I think people who abuse drugs like heroin should be off the street. The problem is we lock them up and magically expect them to get better. I'd rather keep it illegal and try to rehab instead of legalizing it

To answer the question of which would be most harmful for you to begin using, the answer is heroin, alcohol, cocaine.

Largest large scale study of cocaine ever by the WHO (world health organization) found alcohol to be more dangerous than cocaine.

Cocaine has been used for thousands of years in low doses and shown quite a few health benefits.

It will be legal one day. Guarantee it.

What exactly falls into this category? Are we talking simply more extreme?

Basically it would be a 2 prong system

Prong 1 = Legal drug pusher like Merck, Lilly, and Joe Camel

If you make a drug that is in the public good - like anti cancer drugs or diabetes drugs - you get capped on what you can rape the american public for. If you sell nicotine via cigarettes then the only thing in those cigarettes are 100% leaf tobacco. Sorta like 100% purity and no additives to make you more addictive.

Prong 2 = Illegal drug pushers for things like heroin and cocaine. To a certain point the general American public are sheep and need to be protected from their own dumbassery when it comes to certain drugs. Look if you want to do shrooms, great, but check into a shroom hotel for a weekend so nobody is at great peril. If you take shrooms then get into your car and run through the neighbors living room and killing their daughter it is another story.

Those are dangerous drugs, I 100% agree. DON'T USE THEM.

It's a good thing that they are illegal so no one will use them.

Wait...

Right, because being illegal stops the use of these drugs.

Meth wouldn't even exist if other drugs hadn't been made illegal. At one time, most "drugs" were legal

A hit of coke is just like Lay's potato chips - you can't do just one.

Yes. If all is out in the open, most people will seek treatment if ever hung on a substance. There is really zero logical argument for prohibition. We already know drug use has continued to rise despite it, jails are full because of it (non-violent drug offenders), and other countries have decriminalized and have had strikingly positive outcomes.

It boils down to the good ol' no knock raids, where police across the country are able to plug their asses with a copy of the constitution, blow it out their arse as they invade a home and climax as they slam unsuspecting "drug offenders" on the ground in a way to mimic their anger for why they're caught in their current circumstances.

Treat all drug use as alcohol. That shite has killed countless people from my family. The black market is no place to conduct business, and the whole argument of a less safe society with legalization is asinine considering drug cartels run shite and peddle it on back allies.

ETA: And prohibition has led to the likes of Meth. Good shite, amiright? So much better than the alternative.

Yep, look what happened the first time we tried prohibition. At least they learned their lesson a bit sooner.

Highly misleading chart because of the fact that shear volume of sales based on the fact that alcohol is legal in the United States skews the chart. Virtually everything else on the list is a narcotic or illegal.

Yes, they should be legal to a gram. That way you don't put drug users away, but suppliers. Cops should just destroy everything up to a gram. Everything after, you get prison time. Users are chump change, and the costs of the fines don't equate to the price you pay for that person to be in jail.

Sure, why not? I can see some good reasons for legalizing at least a bit of it. Maybe it would help prevent people from screwing around with the reeeally scary shite like Krokodil, and I would think legalizing it would make treatment and counseling programs easier/less stigmatized to get access to for people that need it. Also, Colorado is making a killing off the cannabis industry, so it seems like just a matter of time before other states follow suit, and other policymakers decide to take this little experiment a step further, for that reason alone.

And what would it do to organized crime? The cartels in Mexico make money hand over fist selling drugs in the US, so I'd imagine that legalizing drugs would either undermine them and take away their main revenue source, or just drive them to make their money by selling even more dangerous drugs, or turning to even more nefarious industries (human trafficking being the main one). I don't have a crystal ball or really know enough to know what would happen in that regard, but it's worth considering!

And then there's just the simple fact that our drug policy as it stands right now is accomplishing very little, and MAY be doing more harm than good. Outlawing these drugs and imprisoning people for it hasn't stopped people from doing the shite, and so a lot of neighborhoods are very unsafe thanks to a black market industry that has mushroomed from it all. I don't really know what the answers are, but I'm fairly certain that the status quo isn't working.
