It was completely built by hand.
That is truly remarkable.

The monks that established it traveled down from the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky, which I've also visited, to build this monastery in 1944.
It was originally in the wilderness but it's now less than half an hour from Atlanta.
This is the kind of stuff I wish Americans would cherish more.
It's obviously awesome to go to Europe, but I think a lot of the people that travel the globe to see castles and landmarks and stuff often neglect the awesome stuff right in our backyard.

There are some really amazing things if you take the time to explore. Sometimes they're a little out of the way, but they're definitely worth the effort.

Pretty nice, but why are so many of them tilted?

Artistic expression.

Pictures I took at the Vatican a couple of summers ago, using a Nikon D90:

I take pictures at weird angles. That's my only explanation.

Just a basic Sony Cybershot. It does what I need it to do. I want to get a DSLR but I haven't gotten around to it.

Nice Scrubber. I like that old clock a lot.
I turned down a wedding in Alaska last summer, really wish I'd made the trip.

I always love your pictures.
If I ever make it to Alaska, and I hope to do so soon, I'll need to upgrade my camera. It's the most gorgeous place in the entire country.

That looks cool with the light comin through the windows on the first one.

Beautiful. I'm hoping to take some pictures like that this summer.

Best thing about Alaska, you don't need a great camera or even be a great photographer to get very good pictures. The summer light, the colors, the wildlife do it all for you

It's definitely on the top of my bucket list for places in the U.S. to visit. Particularly Denali. We definitely don't have anything that picturesque in Georgia.

Unless you can get back in the backcountry, Denali is a tough place for photographers. Coastal AK is much more scenic IMO. Either Southeast, Kenai Fjords or Prince William Sound.
Tracy Arm in S.E. is one of my favorite places.
It's like Yosemite with glaciers and 1,000 foot deep sea.
Glacier Bay kicks arse too

Yeah, I've read that about Denali. I'm up for the challenge.
Those pictures are gorgeous though. That seems like it would be right up my alley. I'm envious of you. Definitely prime country for photography.

Yeah, we kind of got the best of both worlds here. Mountains and sea. I live in the Inside Passage 50 miles from Glacier Bay, 40 miles from Tracy Arm, 10 miles from Admiralty Island (Fortress of the Bear) and on the edge of the Juneau Icefield. It's an amazing place, if the weather cooperates, which is the downside.

I had a friend that was stationed at Wainwright. He used to venture out and took some pretty awesome pictures.
I'm a city girl but I could definitely spend some time in the wilderness there... barring bear encounters and serial killer attacks ala Ice Cold Killers haha.

Anchorage isn't a bad place. It's often listed as one of the best cities for young college grads. It's also 30 min. to an hour away from some awesome places.
Not my image
Old Alaskan Joke. What's the best thing about Anchorage?
It's only 30 minutes away from Alaska.
It's often called Los Anchorage.
