The light we see in the stars with the naked eye was emitted millions of years ago, and some of those don't even exist anymore. It takes the light that long to travel here

Well, that's true for some light but not all. For example light from the Sun takes 8 minutes to reach us, from Alpha Centauri it takes 4.3 years and from KIC 8462852 light must travel for 1,481 years before reaching us.

quote:

Assume that the Big Bang theory is true, the universe could be still ever expanding outward from that event, creating new life elsewhere, while we are simply a dot on a timeline

Edwin Hubble showed us that the Universe is indeed expanding. The further from us an object is, the faster it's moving away. This is because space is expanding at an ever increasing rate.

quote:

Will we self destruct and cease to exist as others may have? Will we be the first to develop capability of leaving our planet and inhabiting other planets to continue our existence?

As biological species, we won't be able to traverse great distances in space. We simply can't adapt to that environment. The only way we can spread our sentience is to manufacture an artificial intelligence and send it into the Universe.

quote:

Or are we the only ones?

It's likely that we're the first sentient species in the Milky Way even though life may be ubiquitous wherever conditions for its evolution are present.

quote:

Maybe the theories of other, more advanced civilizations coming to earth to help teach our ancestors their ways so we could develop faster (I.e the Egyptian pyramids as an example).

There's not a shred of evidence that we're anything more than the product of natural evolution. Our species happened to experience survival pressures that caused our brains to acquire new purposes. Those changes vaulted us to the top of the food chain and we have dominated earth like no species before.

We're about to choose from the two worst presidential candidates in history. Pretty sure we're not the most advanced. I say this as a Christian creationist

1 in 1022 doesn't seem that small to me in regards to the chances of intelligent life developing given that a planet is habitable. There is just so much that goes in to it that we don't know about that it certainly seems possible to me that the right building blocks and the right steps of evolution to reach intelligent life could be an astronomically unique thing that rivals the number of habitable planets in the universe.

One meteor could set back the process billions of years, without some of the mass extinction events in pre-history, would intelligent life have even evolved on earth. And what exactly does "intelligent life" entail. Does a planet with a bunch of the alien equivalent of cockroaches count as intelligent life.

bull fricking shite! What makes humans advanced? An Iphone? Pornhub? SECRANT?

Seriously, what makes us 'advanced'? I think we are getting there but we are far from being an advanced species. We are still at an almost perpetual war amongst ourselves, millions are dying of starvation and other preventable diseases. Just because maybe 5% are pretty damn smart, doesn't make them "advanced", let alone the rest of their species.

Good question. Looking back over the evolution of species on earth, 99% of which have gone extinct, the dominant ones seem to have progressed in sync with an advancing body type, culminating in the warm-blooded mammals of which we are the most sophisticated.

Mammals appeared 150 million years ago but were held in check by the dinosaurs. An intelligent mammal might have evolved much earlier in earth's history were it not for those brutish species.

Generally, this question is answered as "a species that is capable of pondering its origins."

No, it's called D.C.

Hell, we're still at 0 on the Kardashev scale.

I'm sure we humans thought we were "advanced" in the freaking renaissance era, too

If there's one constant throughout human history, it's that we are always just so doggone impressed with ourselves as a whole

Well, I say every known and unknown planet is/was once inhabited, and earth will one day reside lifeless in a galaxy along with an inhabited planet, and earth, for a period, will be the focus of study and will be deduced as incapable of supporting life.

We became violent shite throwers when we became agrarian. We began to "own" things, including land, and no longer moved across open land as hunters and gatherers.

No doubt the first war was fought over resources. Even our close cousins, common chimpanzees, will fight as groups over the best plots of land for finding food.

If we had evolved more like the bonobos (another race of chimps), however, we would be making love instead of war. Bonobos settle disagreements by having sex.

Not lemurs, apes, tarsiers or lorises either. We all are primates and evolved from a common primate ancestor but we're as far from a monkey as we are from a dolphin on an intelligence scale.

The one thing I hate is the idea that more advanced species would automatically be against violence and war. That's nothing more than feel good sentiment.as little as we know about the universe I wouldn't make any definite statements about other life.

That's a very good point. Human constructs rule our societies. Good and evil, love and hate, give and take, God and Satan. We seem to be oriented towards dichotomies.

Worse, we tend to think these constructs apply to nature. Humans anthropomorphize almost everything.

That's an arrogance that could get us wiped out if we encounter an alien civilization that has evolved just to take. The Borg from Star Trek, the Next Generation come to mind.

Well we are coming off the two worst back to back presidents in history. The god awful Bush who set the economy back 25 years and screwed up the entire Middle East and Obama who didnt solve any of it and actually screwed up the health care. But i could see how some one who is from the extreme right or extreme left could fear these 2 candidates more.

Anything is possible. The universe is boundless. Chances are there is a planet the same distances from a star that has the same elements in it's atmosphere to make life possible

Unless space travel advances exponentially, we'll never know

Correct statement, but you got your punctuation wrong. Instead of a period after "conjecture", I think you meant to put a colon or, if being less formal, maybe an equal sign.
