Look and see if you can get Mythbuntu or XBMC on it.

The XBMC is going to be available and looks like a pretty easy media server setup. I think this is what i'm going to try with my first one. If that goes well i'll probably buy another or buy an arduino that smoker themometer project sounds perfect for that.

So, because i don't know too much about this--what would be the purpose of buying one--rather the benefits, other than tinkering around with it? Any cool uses besides teh bbq pit controller?(very cool btw)

from what i've read it's just a little bitty computer. they were designed to program on and tinker with mainly but people have found some other uses.

off the raspberry pi website:
3d full body scanner
robotics projects
pizza ordering machine
broadcast local radio to the internet
universal translator

I plan on making it a media server for the back of my tv. This way I can stream and watch to my hearts content. The easy access to sports streams is my main focus because right now i'm having to connect my laptop to the tv and it's a pain in the arse when I want to watch sports and browse the internet at the same time.

I believe so. Mine just got here like 30 minutes ago. It's got 5 or 6 OSs to choose from based on what you're looking for. It runs on linux for the most part but in theory any operating system that will run on ARM processor. but it's basically just a super cheap cpu in and of itself i'll post pictures of mine all hooked up once I get home and get to tinkering.
