We contact former employers but as others have said, most just verify dates of employment and salary.
Having said that, if the application asks (as ours does) "have you ever been forced to resign or involuntarily terminated" do not lie.
We're very restrictive and generally speaking, getting fired from a job (particularly in a mass termination situation) won't keep you from getting hired. On the other hand, lying about or omitting it guarantees you won't be getting the job and will get you fired if you're hired and it is discovered after the fact.

I just forwarded that to her

I'll let her know. The only tricky part is that she applied for these jobs before she was let go. So on the application it says she's still an employee there, but come interview time (today and tomorrow) she ios no longer with the organization.
I just hope it doesn't really come up and they love her.

So my SO's position with her organization was terminated, so her and the rest of her department (7 others) were fired.
She has been on the job hunt already, and has had a few interview lined up this week. Well now she's worried that they'll find out that she was fired, and it affect her getting the new job.
I don't know what all a background check entails, but could they potentially see that she was just fired if they run one?
TIA
I think it depends on what kind of company job she is trying to get. The potential employer in most cases will contact all of the previous employers. I know if I am hiring someone I want some personal insight into that persons work ethic and work history. An actual background check is more for criminal history and things of that nature.

Whether it "comes up" or not, she needs to let them know. They will, at almost a bare minimum, get employment dates. It won't help her to pretend she's still employed there even by avoiding the topic. She needs to be honest and open without sounding whiny and explain what happened.
