emoticons should almost NEVER be used by anybody, and there is only one exception where they can be used.
Emoticons can be used if that is the only form of expression used in the sentence. That is, using emoticons is only acceptable if you are telling the entire story in a series of emoticons.

Depends on the girl. If she's using them in every other text I'll throw one her way every now and then. If she doesn't use them then I DEFINITELY DONT use them.

I'll use emoticons in texts with friends, but other than the rare smiley face, I don't use them when texting my husband, and I can't imagine him ever using them.

She used a couple so I used one and it made me feel weird. It apparently didnt phase her so thats good.
