At 5:36pm, March 27th 1964 a 9.2 earthquake cracked the earth near College Fjord in PWS, causing land to rise in some areas up to 35 feet, and fall in others. You can still see areas affected by the quake in South Central Ak. The ground shook for nearly 5 minutes, most quakes are less than a minute. Some towns were wiped out, some were rebuilt in new locations. People died as far South as Crescent City, California.

It is amazing how quickly you can lose everything that you own.

Actually the tsunami created from that earthquake was what was responsible for most of the damage

Supposedly the water receded out of the fjord at was dropped onto the coastline in Alaska

One of the most unknown severe natural disasters in modern US history

In some areas, yeah. Not in Anchorage or even areas further north.
