More work for same or less pay has been an unfortunate side effect of the recession. As have older workers having to work longer to make up their retirement losses. Demand for labor isn't going to be there when companies can do the same with less. That's not even to mention the regulations that keep businesses sitting on the sidelines.

It's putting a lot of pressure on the middle class and especially young people with tons of debt and paltry means of making it back up. It's still tough out there and we've been the economic leader in the world since the downturn.

People on the govt dole will riot when the dollar fails because they have no experience in survival. They have just been working the system the way the politicians set it up in order to get their vote. When it collapses they will be the ones knocking down your door to steal what you earned.

Be sure to inform them of your ideology when that happens. I'm sure they'll stop.

LOL wut?

The dollar isn't going anywhere. It's the reserve currency of the world for a reason. We have the deepest financial markets on planet Earth and a very stable developed economy and government.

My favorite of the hard right memes.

I know, why wouldn't the poor be behind the anti poverty strategy of cutting their food, healthcare, and housing aid off? Their votes aren't bought, but the right has shown zero interest in actually doing anything about poverty. It's all about demonizing the poor for being lazy leeches. It's all about playing on your emotions, and it works. The left's philosophy on this front is severely flawed, but it's better than "frick em" for the lower class.

Talk about fixing the system instead of getting yourself caught up in the other side of the class wars.

If the dollar collapses we're all pretty fricked anyway. So I'm not going to worry about that.

Stonehog how is that the most ridiculous thing you ever heard? What other system has the ability to make any one wealthy? I'll wait for your answer

I never claimed there was a better system. But saying everyone in a capitalist society has the opportunity to become rich is ridiculous.

I think capitalism gives everyone the best opportunity at getting rich is a more correct way of stating deltaland's post.

no economic system can make anybody wealthy. they give the opportunity to make one wealthy.

in a similar vein, there is no such thing as income inequality. there is such a thing a different income outcome or income starting point. i buy that.

My re-statement of his statement was because of my agreement with your post.

There certainly is. Though a better measure would be wealth inequality imo. Now if you were to say there is no such thing as income equality, I wouldn't disagree.

The question of inequality to me is more a question of severity. At some point it becomes destabilizing to the government and the economy. Large underclasses have not been shy about fricking shite up when the wealth is in the hands of too few. That being said, it isn't a pressing issue for the United States.

As in the US is not guilty of too much wealth inequality? Or it is guilty and just isn't a big deal?

Why I ask is because the greatest movement against this we've seen was the Occupy Wallstreet movement and it fizzled pretty quick with literally no economic impact.

Yes.

The trend isn't where I'd personally like it on that front, but we're obviously not close to the tipping point. I would expand on that thought, but your second line did that better than I could.

Any country regardless of economic position would have done well if they had had what we did to start out.

Great location (ports in both major oceans, centered in the North American continent)
Technology boom (that had nothing to do with the economy)
Massive military (due to virtually unending resources)
An economy built around what we value.

For what it's worth, China with their mixed economy is doing pretty well as is Japan and South Korea -- all because of technology.

Control technology, control the world. The economics behind it has zero to do with it.
