I'm a heavy android man myself. I like to tinker and build home screens. Always rooted every phone I've had.
That being said for my new job I went with an iPhone 5 for pure reliabilities sake. If you want no frills phone that works, go iPhone.
If you want to have some of the new sexiness with a lot more innovation and capabilities go one or GS4
I've considered the W8 phone but it just doesn't seem to do it for me in terms of apps

I'm gonna upgrade in September..but if the Nexus 5 indeed does come out in October i might wait for that..any rumored specs yet?
The note 3 is supposed to have a 5.7 inch screen..pretty damn big. My Galaxy Nexus currently sports a 4.65 in screen which is sorta big to me

I love my iphone, its just so simple to use and it's easy to connect to all my other Apple devices

Check out the new Lumia from Nokia, it has a 42 megapixel camera amongst other really cool innovations!

HTC doesn't have the best record of supporting their phones post release. The HTC Thunderbolt was a disaster.
Get a Nexus 4, or a Galaxy S4, or if you want a whopper get the Note 3 (wait a month or two) or just get the Note 2.
LG makes some really nice phones too.
The iPhone is hopelessly behind. You will get a million people telling you iPhone is the best who have never used another phone since they got their first iPhone in 2008. Times have changed. Jobs died, and with him, his innovation. iPhone is hopelessly behind at this point.

Oh and the Google Moto X is coming out . . specs aren't great but it is a project phone from Google--should be innovative and maybe less than the S4 and HTC one.

Not in your list, and not sure if there is a new one out but.. I got a Razr Maxx about a year ago and freaking love it. Bought it because of battery life. As long as I charge it overnight I have never even come close to running out of battery, and can usually make it through two full days on one charge.
