Trucks won't fit in my garage (100 year old stone house = stuck with space I have). Needs to stay at about 190" or less.

No premium dealerships in town, so XC90 (1st choice), Range Rover, X5, etc. are non-starters.

I am pretty set on the JGC. Customers are in the woods, so I need good offroad credibility.

Wouldn't buy any of those, but there are dealerships in some town nearby.

It's a Chrysler product, so have a repair fund with lots of cash.

Twin Cities are 2.5 hours away, and I've already lived through that with a BMW. Done.

Grand cherokee is the biggest piece of shite on the road. Nothing but electrical problems on top of electrical problems multiplied by leaky head gaskets.

I had a 2012 4Runner SR5 4x4 for a couple of years.

Was the interior as nice as others in its class? No.

Did it haul arse like my Yukon with a 6.2? No-but it did fine with 4.0 V6.

Was it fuel efficient? Not the best, but as expected.

Was it as pretty as the others? No.

Was the interior space sufficient for loading it down for trips? Yes-it was amazing. Definitely more than my 2-door Tahoe, and probably at least equal with my current Yukon. When I folded down the 2nd row in the 4Runner, you could haul more than my Yukon.

Was it body-on-frame? Yes.

Did it have more stock off road capability than all others in its class? On par or better than JGC.

Was it reliable? Hell yes.

The last 4 are what sold me.

After putting adjustable Bilsteins and General Grabber A/T tires on it, it was good to go. Before that, it rode like a 1980's station wagon.

I have a 4runner and a buddy of mine has a GC.

His is nicer on the interior.
My 4wd system is better.

His has a larger engine and can go faster.
Mine has never been in the shop.

All about priorities my man. If you want a plush interior then GC is the bees knees. If you want durability its tough to beat 4runner.

Thanks for the input, guys. I had not looked at a 4Runner, simply because it never appeared on any "best" compilations. I decided to look into it more, and the reviews are pretty unflattering for the newest models. Consensus seems to be that it is really good for true off-roading, but lacks punch, road manners, and comfort.

Again, big constraint is that overall length needs to be <~190" long. 4Runner does this, but I don't need hardcore off-road. I have customers that work pretty deep in the woods, but not so bad that JGC would struggle. A "grocery getter" (Tahoe, Lexus RX, etc.) would. But, I also have to deal with bankers, lawyers, etc., and want something that can dress up when needed.

Talked to several people who own JGC's in the last couple of days. Sounds like reliability is a bit overblown, but something to keep an eye on.

Still pretty set on it, but I do wish I had a bigger garage. Damn historical house.

I'm sure you have already seen this...but here is a list of vehicles with a GVWR over 6,000 to choose from. What is available is really limited by your 190" length.

At 189.8", the Grand Cherokee is the only 4wd option on the list under 190. There are several under 195...but for the GVWR, length and 4wd option...you are pretty much stuck with the Grand Cherokee as far as I can see.

ETA...the 4runner is 190.2...so it is over 190, but if it would fit, that would be the vehicle of choice for me.

I would take an explorer over a JGC. IMHO.

How about an Xterra? My sister and her husband each had a JGC and both had issues with them. I have not had any major issues with my Xterra, just routine maintenance. The 18's look pretty sweet.

Bought my wife an Xterra. Very rugged and dependable and relatively inexpensive.

The Xterra is nice, too.

one of my neighbors bought a JGC for his daughter 2 weeks ago. it wouldn't start this week and is already at the dealership trying to figure out what is wrong. buyer beware.
