It's amazing to me how many people (lottery winners, athletes, business people) just waste millions of dollars on nothing. Absolutely no self control or common sense at all.
An article popped up on my Facebook feed yesterday that talked about lottery winners of the past and it is truly amazing. They talked about the fact that 70% of lottery winners are broke within 5 years with the amount of money having no bearing on the percentages. 70% of the winners whether they won 1 million or 200 million, went broke within 5 years.
I can't fathom going broke in 100 years with 200 million in winnings, even if you plan on 60% taxes on it you still pocket a straight up 40 to 60 million depending on what they use for future value. Take 40 million and put it in a savings account earning .5 percent and you are still getting 200k a year and that is earning absolutely jack shite for interest and the absolute dumbest way you could earn interest on it.

If I could keep it 100% private that I had the money, I completely agree.
There was a reddit post that talked about how the people around you will pressure, steal and blackball you if you don't share your winnings.
Friends your whole life get pissed/hate you if you don't start picking up food/drink tabs, family expect you to help out with all their problems, people expect/encourage poor spending behavior
The post outlines what you should do if you win money. Essentially the 100% guaranteed way is to lock the money up in a trust so you can deny any request for money.
Once you give money to one person, everyone wants a piece of that action. You either choose between friends or money at that point

Like your arse wouldn't jump in the middle of those saggy tits, if only she was your sister.
ETA: an Ole Miss and a Mizz fan complain about tits. If she had a Caitlyn Jenner complex y'all would have worn both arms and wrists out.

I absolutely believe this, but if I won 100 Million, I would probably be OK with picking up the tab about 100% of the time.
And I would probably tell my friends that I will help them if needed, but I would be fair about it with all of them, and put limitations.

You can have it paid out as an annuity. Some people say this is the better way to go because it keeps yourself/family/friends from blowing it all like this chick did.

Annuities are great for people who win that have no self control, but objectively it's the worse decision.
Investing most of the lump sum is more optimal and living off the dividends.

Or, if you cannot control yourself, hire a good financial planner who can manage the investments and provide a level of accountability.

She only won a little over 1 million? My guess is she was stupid with the money and has a lot of debt so is suing the lottery hoping to get paid for "damages".
I feel no sympathy for her. If it's so hard on her life, then donate it to charity.

Obviously. But so many people blow through their money that I would say for 90% of people, annuity payments would be better.

If they can't control themselves what makes you think they'll listen to a financial planner?
You also have the risk of hiring somebody who doesn't have your best interest in mind like so many of these pro athletes do.
Many of these people have no idea how to handle money and have no idea what they're looking for in a good financial advisor.

I irrationally hate her after reading that

She won 1.25M. Eurotaxes probably scalped 45%. She was broke before she started spending

Lack of education on how to manage money. But even then that stillbmay not help as people like Bernie Madoff has shown that even the wealthiest of the wealthy can be swindled of their money.

The first step is always acknowledging that you have a problem.
