I can't understand why anyone would want a charcoal grill instead of gas. Maybe the cost. The convenience of gas beats charcoal for me.

Some people claim that charcoal grills give a better taste but that isn't true. The grilled taste comes from burning fat that drips off the meat. Both gas and charcoal grills do that.

That may have to do with the added bonus for charcoal grills-you get an extra 30-45 minutes of cocktail time in letting the charcoal get right.

I know my dad used this bonus time for an extra Stag or 2-and sometimes those pork steaks were akin to thick cut, crispy-fried bacon.

I believe ANSI standards require that 2-3 threads of the bolt extend past the nut.

it's just sitting up there nothing is tight yet. I'm still fitting everything, the only thing welded out is the 4 corners of the main frame

charcoal gives very nice taste when you dont burn the meat. You have to pay attention to it. not just close the lid and go for another beer.

The thing is if you get lazy and get some of that matchlight type charcoal that has chemicals in it, it can give a bad taste to the food. It also gives me a bad case of the trots for a couple days. For that reason alone, we went with a gas grill. Plus we like to grill during the week, where just turning on the grill in 5 minutes to cook a quick steak or something is nice.

I have both a Weber gas and a Weber charcoal grill. Time permitting, I much prefer the charcoal. I think with most meats there is a huge difference in taste. Oddly, steak is about the only meat I can't tell much of a difference so I usually cook them on the gas grill.

Bingo! I got home at 5 yesterday and had 8 burgers, 8 hotdogs and a sausage link on the table in 35 minutes.

And you will have to have a powerful gas grill if you ever want a Ruth cris filet at home. Gotta hit 600+

Just for my edification, why do you think the charcoal grill gives a better taste? After all, charcoal doesn't smell or taste very good. Do you think it's because charcoal is burned wood?

Yeah they are just tight enough to hold the axle so I can check a few dimensions then it comes back off

Sometimes I throw some mesquite or hickory chips onto the coals at the end, let them start burning, then shut down the vents. That gives steaks, burgers, etc. a nice smoky flavor to finish.

Hmm, never thought of that. I knew that's why a smoker gives such a great taste but I had never made the transitive association with charcoal grills. Gonna have to try that. Thanks.

I really have no idea. Many times it's because I add some smoking chips to the fire to give the meat a little bit of smoke flavor. But even when I don't, I think some meats, especially pork chops and chicken wings, taste better from a charcoal grill. Maybe it's just some sort of placebo effect where I think it tastes better just because it's more labor intensive to build a fire and maintain the right temp.

Weber kettle is the best all around. And grilling means using charcoal -- gas is just cooking. I use both, but the old Weber black kettle is the best all around

Just get really thick aluminum foil, wrap the wood chips in it. Then poke some holes in the top. Soak your wood chips in water the night before. They'll start smoking nicely in time to add the wood fire taste to the meat on the gas grill.

Are people in Texas, you know, cool with gas grills? Other than the aforementioned Hank Hill.

Seems like you might get your arse kicked for cooking with propane in Texas.
