Why would they schedule a drill like this when the weather is that bad ? Why wouldn't they inform the teachers that they need to make sure the students were properly dressed? They knew that the drill would take place so don't let the students in the pool or change into swimsuits before the drill. Why didn't they give her a towel when she got out of the pool, I'm sure they had one easily accessible. Dumb

My guess is they were trying to make the drill realistic. In that case, the student wouldn't have time to change clothes or make cocoa before going outside.

A faulty lab experiment triggered the fire alarm. How stupid was the lab instructor not to pass the message that it was his/her room and that there was no fire.

Understand your point but some common sense needs to be used if the weather was that cold.
Read another post stating it wasn't a drill and that it was a false alarm.
I don't think anyone needs to be sued but they need better planning / procedure to make sure the students are safe when they exit the school.
It is better that one student might get hurt outside than multiple die inside but still a little common sense could have prevented the girl from getting frostbite.

No. This is what's wrong. You don't need better procedures. You just need people smart enough to know when not to follow procedure. Procedure simply cannot cover every situation or instance. Do the right thing and it all works out.

Why does that school have a swimming class in the winter? Even if it is indoors that's just asking for trouble. You live in Minnesota.. you can swim for maybe 60 days out of the year.

The article I read said that her coach told her there wasn't time to do anything but go outside.

Wow, this girl is in ninth grade? I thought it was some little kid. That makes it even worse, a 14-15 year old should have enough sense to grab a towel and some flip flops on the way out the door.

I caught a little frostbite in the Mojave Desert as a kid (who knew it got cold in the deser? Not dad.
), but it wasn't that bad and not debilitating at all.
You hear frostbite and you think of climbers losing ears, noses, fingers and toes on Everest or something. Doubt if this was anything like that. Not good for the school, but not a huge tragedy, either.
