Well, it's true. I don't know a single person that was in when I was that joined out of a sense of patriotism. Hell, two of them are straight up pacifist hippies who despise the military now. Most joined for the college money or to get out of small towns. A few joined because they would be in jail otherwise.

I expected Georgia to be up there but I'm scratching my head over Florida?

When I was in there were a lot of enlisted from Ohio, Texas, Florida and California. Didn't run into too many enlisted from Louisiana. Many of my closest buddies were from Alabama. They never talked trash to me or got any roll tide because we owned them during those years.

Most teenagers, these days, join the military in order to pay for school. Louisiana has two things that make that less necessary:
1. TOPS
2. blue collar jobs
Louisiana's TOPS program makes an education at a state school affordable for most prospective students with any amount of drive or intelligence.
Louisiana offers a ton of opportunities for blue collar work relative to other states. Oil field trash, operators, dock workers, ship builders, fishermen, safety specialists, equipment operators, electricians, carpenters, ironworkers, welders, machinists, boilermakers, plumbers, pipefitters, masons, AC Techs, ect

Louisiana has O&G. Good paying jobs for the uneducated. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.

There are two bases in Jacksonville, one in Pensacola, one near Cocoa Beach, probably more I can't remember.

Statistically speaking, the poorer the state, the more military members that state will produce. Same goes with education. Lower education=More military involvement.
I was surprised by the Dakota's until I remembered that quite a few large corporations are moving their home offices there due to tax breaks.

Imagine that, the people benefit when businesses avoid taxation.

Two of my best friends who I served with were both from Louisiana.
Neither of them returned there though, after they retired. One is still in North Carolina and the other is in Atlanta.

Link? The OP directly contradicts your statement.
Also, the military is wonderful for social mobility upward for a lot of kids. I'm often amused at the logic gymnastics some people will go to explain both how the military is 'preying' on poor kids, but also is an enormous opportunity for them.
One of the reasons the military has so many people from low income backgrounds is that many from the north east or upper class families think they are too good or valuable to serve the country. I knew several enlisted guys from NICE parts of San fransisco and New York, who literally joined because it was what their families expected of them. They didn't need the money, they both either partially or were the sole owner of a small business.

The military is a great way for poor and working class kids to escape poverty, but it's these kids who are the true casualties of war. Our world policing and exercise in nation building make a small number of people a ton of money, and you can bet it isn't the parents of our dead or wounded.

Why would you join the military when you can make 6 figures working offshore, or in a refinery.
