My point was that the laws are fluid. You shouldn't base an ethical argument on laws because they are artificial and change with time.

Ethical? There are crazy people out there. I've got a messed up knee, I can't run. I should be able to defend my life.
6 people in China just killed 29 people and injured another 140 with knives. We're really good at killing each other, and if you take away guns, we'll just find a more barbaric way.

Not to go all poli-board on this thread, but if anti-gunners really cared about child safety every swimming pool in the country would be filled in. I've been a cop 19 years. Only have worked one accidental shooting of a kid (and that was by another kid). I bet I've had 10 or more drownings of infants and small children.

Nuclear bombs don't do harm, people do
heroin dosn't do harm, people do
and you can keep going.
Although your right guns don't do harm, people do is not an argument for anything it's just a statement. And if you're just making a statement then fine. But if you're implying an argument against gun regulations/controls then the exact same argument the same argument can be used against laws to control nuclear weapons, dirty bombs, heroin, and on and on.
So it's not so much a dumb argument as a useless statement that is a waste of time

Heroin and nuclear weapons are a particularly horrible comparison to draw.
