As part of a national movement to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, some Little Rock workers plan to convene the city’s first wage board Tuesday.
Little Rock’s four-member board is made up of Democratic State Representatives Charles Blake and Vivian Flowers, the chair of Arkansas Community Organizations Donna Massey, and Revered Stephen Copley, who led the recent voter-approved effort to gradually raise the minimum wage in Arkansas to $8.50 by 2017.
“Wage boards have been around the country for a number of years and they all vary depending on the circumstances as to whether they come and listen or come and listen and issue a report. But there seems to be a deep concern in our country that folks are working hard and they’re just not able to get out from behind the eight ball,” said Copley.
Little Rock’s board hopes to capitalize on the success of a similar group in New York. In September, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo approved a proposal made by that state’s Wage Board, which he appointed, that would gradually increase the minimum wage of fast food workers to $15 per hour. In contrast, Little Rock’s board has been organized by workers and will carry no official legislative power.

Cost of living in LR is not high enough to warrant 15/hr. They're insane.

Does anyone in Arkansas even make $10 an hour?

Do they understand a $10 hamburger at McDonalds will result, and they will lose those jobs because the stores will close?

Not everyone making minimum wage works in fast food.

I didn't say that. Was just making the point that a higher minimum wage will cause jobs to disappear that exist today.

I wonder how many will be willing to double their work productivity in exchange for double their pay...

Arkansas has one of the most progressive minimum wages in the country relative to COL right now.
It is at $7.50 and is scheduled to rise next year, and again to $8.50 in January 2017. It isn't as big a problem here as in most places, actually.
In 2017, an Arkansas minimum wage earner will make $17,680 per year. In places in the state that can hire people for that wage, a couple could probably afford to get by on that.

Well, just saying. We are in the lowest COL tier, and our minimum wage is going to be above average before long. It will be $8 January 1st next year.
It might not be a "living wage" in some areas of the state, but its a helluva lot closer in parts of Arkansas than it is in most of of the U.S. In Fort Smith or Jonesboro, or even Springdale, that wage will get you by pretty ok.
Colorado is only at $8.23, for example. Compare rents in most of that state with most of Arkansas.
