I liked Def Leppard back then. I wore out the Hysteria album. Ballad rock and big hair stuff was just huge between '86 and '90. That's what white kids in jr. high and high school listened to. It was the concert era of rock. I transitioned into metal after it all died and music changed completely. Then the "black album" came out and metal became mainstream for a while.

The Smiths is my favorite 80's band, along with Talking Heads though most of their best stuff was in the 70's.
The "best" is too subjective.
