Just go along with me for a minute on this BS hypothetical.

A financial crisis hits the U.S the likes of which a first world country has never seen. People are murdering each other over food, water, shelter, supplies, medicine, etc. The dollar is better used as tinder for a fire than commercial trade and there is complete anarchy.

What do you do and where do you go?

I'm heading straight to the mountains and taking advantage of Tennessee having the largest network of caves in the U.S -- We've got well over 1,000 miles of underground cave systems and some of the most unhospitable terrain if you're not from around here and don't know the land/mountains. Plenty of wild game, annual rain, lakes, rivers, millions of acres of untouched forest, etc.

My brother has a cave on his property that the Cherokee used for hundreds of years prior to the settlers arriving in East TN. It still has some pottery and art work drawn all over the rock walls inside of it. We would use it in the same manner that they did. The only visible entrance is lower than knee high, forcing you to crawl in. It's so low to the ground that if you didn't know that it was there you would walk right by it and never realize it. The location is secluded and the entrance is easy to hide. The main cavern could probably sleep 40 comfortably with plenty of smaller rooms and 2 hidden alternate exits. We've got a few places that we could easily pop out of and "reach out and touch somebody" if need be. Anyways, that's where myself and about 15 others would be. I think we could ride something out for a long time in that spot if we had to. With that being said.. What's your plan and where do you go?

In my mind, the Appalachian, Cumberland and Ozark Mountains would be ideal. Possibly down in the swamps of S LA or S FL ? The caves in Kentucky?-- Places where knowing the land and seclusion go hand in hand.
With that being said.. What's your plan and where do you go?

You could definitely live out of Mammoth Cave.

My family has old tobacco land down near the Tennessee border. That's probably where I would head.

ETA: There are also major caverns under the city of Louisville. But those are pretty well known at this point. Would probably be a bit crowded.

Piney Woods of East Texas. Not that it's the best location possible, but I know it well and have family there. We have 150 acres with a large creek, deer, and a shitload of feral hogs to eat. It's also well off of the main highway, which is only a 2-lane FM anyway.

Going to my parents house in rural Tennessee. It's in the middle of the woods and there's an arsenal there. Stepmom never allowed us to hunt our own land, so hunting for food would be no problem.

Southeast corner of the Okefenokee swamp. Insects and gators should keep most people away. Plenty of game to hunt and gator is some of the best eating ever. Probably not nearly as good if you have to cook it plain over a camp fire but hey its the end of the world sacrifices must be made.

It is not coastal but relatively close. I think in a scenario such as you described Salt would quickly become one of the most valuable assets in the country so being able to access the ocean could be important.

eta: meant to respond to the OP....and I would do the above only after I sacked the prepper that lives down the road:)

The Ozarks. Lots of game, lots of clear fresh springs everywhere.

You got a spot up there or just making spur of the moment campsite locations?

Just noticed where you are from. I am from a map dot about halfway between Augusta and Savannah. Basically, the middle of nowhere:)

My dad's place in the Ozarks. Borders a national forest, so lots of game. About a mile from a river, so good water and fishing. Remote and heavily wooded.

Southeastern Louisiana swamps. I'd get a pirogue and use the vast canal network for transportation at night to scavenge and build a camouflaged home in the swamp.

I can see the swamps being very advantageous so long as long as you know the ways in which she works. Something the Cajuns would thrive in and outsiders probably wouldn't make it 6 months in. I'd say the bayou would be one of the best or one of the worst habitats depending on your upbringing.

AL & MS guys, where are you heading?

Gulf Shores, live off the sea for nourishment. Make a headquarters inside Souvenir City and design a new currency based around key chains and airbrushed sand dollars.

Chances are your refuge will be right where you lay your head every night. By the time you realize it's time to bug out, so will everyone else. All arteries out of the major urban areas will be choked and impassable. What's your plan B?
