Y'all laugh, but this exact thing happened to me in Hartsfield airport security coming back into the US from an international flight. I had some earplugs in my carry-on bag, and the TSA agents pulled me out of the re-entry line and gave me the riot act. They thought the earplugs were rubber bullets, too.

Good thing you weren't from DC, then you'd have had to show your passport.
