For anyone interested this guy does a 4 part video series explaining why buying is not always better than renting. It's somewhat over simplified but it makes the point. Buy vs. Rent

I live in a college town. Rent rates are absolutely absurd. Our monthly payment for an equal-sized home would be about 4-5 times higher. Not exaggerating.

I think it's the exact opposite in Oxford. I use to think rent rates were high there until I moved to Jackson and they are twice as high and they don't include any utilities or even a washer and drier. I think property values here are cheaper as well bc the supply is obviously a lot greater as a whole.

Like the guy in the video says, it really just depends on the circumstances and what you get when you run the numbers.

He's probably never owned a decent home. And living in a trailer just doesn't give one a good perspective on home ownership! :

I own a house. I don't know that I wouldn't rather rent one where I live. Not the liveliest real estate market.
