Either this is bullshite or they have gotten so advanced with sex change operations that they're playing God now and it may not be safe to take what you think is a girl home from the bars anymore 
Hell look at the canadian pageant where that "girl" who was a transgender was in. If you saw "her" randomly at a bar you'd be buying drinks for 'her" if you didn't know.

I'm guessing as part of the sex change she had to undergo hormone replacement therapy or something along those lines.

No you don't. I got curious and went looking.
With male to female, there's very little difference in the genitals of those born female and those that have had surgery. Very little difference as in, as some showed concern about sleeping with a transgender female and not knowing, they wouldn't likely know.
It's a completely different story for female to male surgery. There's no getting around it. You would know.
