i can actually say I have lost some sleep over it.

the other night we were camping and I couldn't sleep and i was thinking about the BS we get all up in arms over here over minute crap(Sterling, Bengazi, Michael Sam) and there are really terrible atrocities going on elsewhere.

I understand out of sight, out of mind, but I wish that sometimes people had perspective and thought "man it sucks that Mr./Mrs. Smith is such a bigot/homophobe/jerk/whatever, but i'm glad i live in a country where the most radical amongst us don't get to kill/silence dissenting viewpoints"

It certainly sucks, and that life shouldn't be afforded to anyone -- but it's happening in a lot of other places. What's a real shame is that people use this to say that they're worldly, while being completely ignorant of Syria, Ukraine, India, Pakistan, list goes on and on.

I honestly don't really care. There are far worse things going on in the world than this, I imagine.

If I'm going to be completely honest there's probably little worse than sexual slavery.

The bad kind of sexual slavery, not the good kind.

Genecide and terrorism come up as worse IMO.

"little worse" is a qualifier -- saying that there are worse things out there so listing them is kind of a platitude.

Genocide and terrorism though -- maybe not as bad as being kept in a dungeon and having some fat dude plow you until you come of age and then either kills you or sells you into the really shitty slavery -- picking cotton.

Why? Kidnappings happen every day in Nigeria. Its Africa and its a total shithole.

The only reason this is news is because the white house needed a feel good story to push to show how strong Obama is on foreign affairs. Hell, Nigeria (and teh whole African Union) don't want us to help. We aren't even allowed to send armed troops to 90% of African countries.

This whole thing is a manufactured story to drum up the polls and distract from Obamacare, Kerry's farting around in the middle east, the recent total failure of the trade deals with east Asia, the recent total failure of the trade deals with Eastern Europe, the dismal jobs and growth numbers, Benghazi, etc.

Nigeria isn't the Sudan or the Congo and 300 teenage girls aren't kidnapped from dormitories to be sold into sex slavery everyday.

What?

The Nigerians don't want our help mainly because Obama chided Goodluck Jonathan (best President name ever) over the Nigerian military's own history of human rights abuses. They have seemed willing to take the British and French help. Probably because Africans don't have a troubled history with those two powers unlike America.

Boko Haram are fricking evil. They kidnapped these girls for ransom, and to make a point about education. Women from their perspective should be in the home making babies, not getting an evil western education. Hell that's what their name means, Western Education is Evil. They are a terrorist organization attempting to create an radical Islamist nation in the north of what is otherwise one of the more hopeful stories in Africa. It's Africa though, so frick em?

It's the subject of international outrage that have even Al-Qaeda groups condemning their actions. I'm glad the majority of people in this world aren't so cynical as to see a story of atrocities and not think it's manufactured outrage to distract from fricking Benghazi!?

300 teenage girls sold into slavery after being kidnapped from their dorms, and you think the outrage is just being drummed up for political cover for Obama!?

For frick's sake...

I find it odd nobody in the media who is so outraged over this never mentions the at least 58 boys who were slaughtered worse than livestock. It kinda reeks of a ratings ploy to me. It's not like this stuff is new.

Exactly. Boys are not kidnapped. Their throats are slit where they're found.

I think the Boko Horam group are causing so much outrage because they are targeting children. It would be horrific enough if they were raiding villages, killing the men and abducting the women.

What they're doing with the children is off the scales of obscenity. When even Al Qaeda condemns their actions, you know they're monsters.

Yep. Some were locked in a dormitory while they set fire to it. Others were decapitated and some were shot down running. It's unbelievably appalling but it never gets mentioned. At least I haven't heard it.

I'm not trying to downplay what happened to the girls at all bc it is appalling as well. I just don't get why all the outrage is over what happened to them.

Not really. Boko Haram attacked over 50 schools over the course of the last year. It's because it's 300 girls, IMO. Boko Haram has been targeting children for some time.

Well, yeah, that and the news that President Goodluck Jonathan waited almost three weeks before acting. Does that mean no action at all has taken place prior to this incident? All the killings of the boys and other abductions of girls? What a revolting government Nigeria must have.
