That was the conclusion I had after my experience. If a strong EF4 or EF5 plowed through my house, we'd likely be killed. No one around here has a basement or storm shelter.

Same here due to the water table it's very rare for homes to have basements unless they are in an elevated area. The big thing around here is steel safe rooms anchored into the concrete in the center of the house.

1977, took out part of my neighborhood. I hate a tornado, will take an earthquake any day over one.

I was standing at the back window in my house. We had a bunch of pecan trees, and I was watching the wind whip them around. The wind got stronger and stronger. The trees whipped around more, and I just stood there watching. Finally, debris started flying around, limbs started coming off, and it dawned on me that I was in a tornado. I quickly took cover in a small cubby, and the roof came off of part of the house. It seemed to take forever, but I guess it went pretty quickly.

My g/f at the time was taking a bath when the tornado hit. As soon as I could, I got to the bathroom, and found out that she was safe. For the rest of the day, I was telling anyone that would listen, "You know, they say to get into the bathtub if you are ever in a tornado. Kate here thought they meant to run some water and take your clothes off before you get in."

Pretty much.

It's why people have concrete reenforced safe-rooms instead of basements in places where the water table is too high for a basement.

I've been lucky to never be in a tornado, but I've been through quite a few hurricanes. Opal, Ivan, Georges, Katrina, Issac. Give me those any day. You know they're coming, the wind won't take your house unless it's the kid of storm you just evacuate for, and you get a week off where everyone just grills and gets drunk all day.

I've been through two small ones. The second one was at night so I didn't witness much.

But the first one, I was in highschool at work and I was looking outside the large glass windows onto the street because the color of the sky turned this really strange greenish sort of color, and everything got pretty still, then shite just went off. Saw the funnel touch down in the middle of the road, and siding get ripped off of surrounding buildings and start swirling. I yelled at everyone in the store to get away from the windows and we all ran to the back of the building and just bunkered down. As it approached the noise level got louder and louder until it passed over us. It sounded like a train. Was pretty freaked out. Luckily nobody was hurt, just blown out car/store windows, and some minimal damage to the building itself. a ruptured gas line however caused everyone to evacuate. Can't imagine having to go through a big tornado.

i've seen probably..5. the thing about tornados is that unless they HIT, like within 200-300 yards i'm like meh.

i've sat outside and looked at one that was about a mile away a few years ago
