Never been there before, but I had to shell out the money to take the detour from St. John's.

My parents spent a week or so there in 2001 when their plane from London was one of countless ordered down as soon as they reached North America, due to the 9/11 attacks.

Gander gained a small bit of long overdue recognition and gratitude during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics when the world turned back to Canada, a nation world famous for being friendly to a fault.

I sadly was unable to find the family that befriended my parents (both have since passed), to thank them, but, visiting the airport, I finally have an image to go with a phone call that is forever burned in my brain. "We're Okay, we're on the ground, we're in Canada and we're Okay."

Sad you didn't get to meet the family that helped them. That would have been cool.
