For dumb people.

I tend to agree. Just because people have been doing things for a long time doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I think spanking can work, but I think not spanking works AT LEAST as well and you're not inflicting pain on a child to get them to change their behavior. I just never understood why me hitting my kid (I have a four year old and a two year old) is supposed to teach him to be a better kid.

My kids are generally well-behaved and, for the most part, aren't little assholes the vast majority of the time. Sometimes they are, but that would be the case whether I smacked them or not because they're kids and are figuring stuff out while their brains develop.

The biggest argument for people that support hitting kids is that they were hit as children and they think they turned out fine, when in reality they're really shitty people.

Most of the really shitty people I've met didn't get spanked at all. One of them is 24 and if her mom gave a shite about her 12 felonies so far, she'd give her a good whoopin every damn day.

Better for younger children but what it does is enable a parent to teach respect for authority and to make the child listen to the parent.

That's a broad brush. You were spanked, weren't you?

To each his own. Some children take to it, others don't. It worked for me and my siblings growing up, and we are all now personally and professionally successful. But that was before the days of everybody wins sports and the new, sensitive, coddling society of the past 30 years, and the warp-speed destruction of culture and the family.

I have 4 kids. Spanking worked for the first one. For the second one, spanking only made things worse so we had to use other punishments for him. #3 and #4 are twins and the thing that works most for them is to sit in timeout in a corner and I rarely have to pop their hands. So, in my experience as a parent, there are some times when it is right and effective and others where it isn't. Each child is different and the goal is to teach, educate, love, and mold them. Spanking for the heck of it never works so however it is that you can get through to the child is the correct method of punishment for them.

4 kids here and spanking does work to a certain degree on all of them but different tactics do yield better results with each of them. And yes, our kids are very well behaved at home, school and in public.

Spanking is not for everyone. I didn't need it that much but my brother sure as hell did.
