The only better answer would mean zero moves. I made it in one move, so unless the answer is zero I'm right.

3, and 4 are correct. 2 is not.

1. while not the answer given in the thread, is a better answer than the one given in the thread

I guess you could turn it upside down and it would work. Is that considered one move?

Eta or look at it upside down and not touch them.

It can't, and Duke's answer is perfect. He's waffling

Moving on... Weirdly, I just got an e-mail from StumbleUpon for this page, which fits in nicely here:

If the answer is that, I'm going to punch the guy asking the question in the face.

They are match sticks on a surface. You could either walk around it or turn it 180. Either way you haven't moved a match stick (0 moves).

Good answer.

And I await your punch in the face

Done while everybody was hating on MIZ_COU, so it might have been missed:

Don't be hatin. I see nothing wrong with that puzzle anyway.
I've heard the 4 men in hats so i have to disqualify myself

have you heard this one

You have a thousand $1 bills. You also have 10 envelopes.

How do you distrubute the dollar bills in those 10 envelopes, so that no matter what amount of money I ask you for between 1 and 1000, you can hand me some combination of envelopes and always be assured of giving me the correct amount of cash.

Four Men in Hats

C calls out his hat. He knows that that D behind him can see both his and B's hat and figures out that if his hat were the same color as B's, D would see two hats of the same color and immediately know he had one of the opposite color. But since D does not say anything, C deduces his hat must be of the opposite color of B in front of him.

didn't look at answer, is this right?

Duke beat me to it, dammit. The first 9 are obvious to programmers and the only possible combination for sums 1-511. The only non-obvious part is what about 489? Conveniently, 1000-489=511, and you already have a solution for 1 thru 511.

Been learning some programming recently and that's exactly how I came to the answer.

I - III = II

Move the top match stick from the equals sign and place it horizontally above the minus sign.

You then have I = III - II
