Their currency was extremely overvalued. They want it to be on par with the US dollar. With that being said, most economists believe it was hurting their growth in exports. By devaluing the currency, it makes it cheaper/more likely to hit their export growth target.

Gotcha.

I wonder how much they should let their currency devalue as China is trying to transition from an export based economy to a consumer based one. China has a hell of a needle to thread before their one child demographics time bomb blows up.

my 401k and kids 529 accounts are getting hard fricked. Not much I can do about that right now.

Meh. It's not that big of a deal. By the time you retire you should go through 4 or 5 market corrections.

call and put options are nothing more than straight up gambling... you are better off just putting everything on red at the roulette wheel...

I have found puts and calls to be pretty safe and very profitable, as long as the underlying stocks, etc. are good picks. They make a lot more than my "safe" stuff. If you make the wrong stock picks to sell options on, you are screwed however.

So, in other words, gambling.

Sure, but GOOD gambling

Bad gambling would be playing roulette as another poster suggested. The house almost always wins, and the more you play the more you will lose.

Selling puts and calls on good stock picks would give you very good odds of winning almost every time

Even if you "lose" by having a stock go down and your put option being exercised, you can still win by selling calls on it until it sells. As long as the stock is good and doesn't tank, your odds are very good that you will make money almost every time.

That said I would say don't mess with it unless you know what you are doing or have good help from a CFP.
